The Funeral Industry Has Always Been About Serving People for Ginger Selby

Many factors go into choosing the right profession. For some, it’s a high salary, while for others it’s the accolades or promotions that come with career growth. For Ginger Selby, the decision to work in the funeral industry was an easy one – it was about the people.

“Some jobs come with awards, but the greatest milestone has been helping families each and every day,” said Selby. “It is rewarding to help people through one of life’s most challenging events.”

A Lifelong Calling

Selby entered the funeral profession at her family’s funeral home in Pickens, South Carolina. What began as part-time work quickly became her career path. She is now a licensed funeral director and embalmer and holds a pre-need insurance license – credentials that reflect a deep level of expertise and commitment to every aspect of funeral care.

Her passion for serving others didn’t just grow from experience – it was shaped by her values. Funeral service, for her, is not a job but a ministry of care, dignity, and respect.

Rooted in the Lowcountry

A graduate of the College of Charleston, Selby always felt a strong pull toward the Lowcountry. She spent childhood summers on the Isle of Palms and eventually returned to Charleston to continue her work at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., in January 2016.

Since joining Stuhr’s, Selby has served in a variety of roles including Advance Planning, Funeral Director, and Director of Operations. Today, she leads as the Managing Director of the Mount Pleasant Chapel. But what she does always comes back to the company’s number one mission and that’s ‘It starts with people.”

A Reputation Built on Compassion

Ask Selby about what sets J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. apart, and she’ll point to its culture of respect, service, and integrity.

“They not only have a great reputation in Charleston, but they have a great reputation in our industry,” said Selby. “They genuinely care about their staff, and we care deeply about our client families before, during, and after a loss.”

Life Beyond the Chapel

When she’s not working, Ginger enjoys playing tennis, boating, and reading. She and her husband, Ed, are proud parents of two adult children, Daniel and Kathleen, and a beloved dog named Skipper. Selby also remains engaged with her alma mater by serving on the College of Charleston Alumni Board.

A Legacy of Service

For Ginger Selby, success isn’t measured in accolades or titles – it’s measured in the trust of families and the relationships built along the way. Nearly 40 years into her career, her story is a reminder that funeral service is, above all else, a calling rooted in empathy, guidance, and the belief that people matter most.
