Coping with the Loss of a Loved one

When an individual loses a loved one, it can be challenging to learn how to move forward. The grief process is not linear, nor is it predictable.

Stuhr Funeral Home not only assists families through planning funerals and memorial services for their lost loved ones but also provides support and care for those who are moving through the grief process.

Janice Meyer, a board-certified grief counselor at Stuhr Funeral Home, acknowledges that the grief process is highly personal. “Grief is impacted by many different factors. J. Henry Stuhr offers grief support options facilitated by a board-certified grief counselor for the bereaved,” she says.

 Their options include:

  1. One-on-one grief support to further assess the needs, options, preferences, and other referrals for the person grieving as needed.
  2.  “ABCs of Grief”: a grief support group offered in four-week sessions that meets once a week for eight weeks. It is offered in different geographic locations in the Charleston tri-county area and on Zoom at various times throughout the year.
  3. A monthly grief support group that meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at J. Henry Stuhr, located at 232 Calhoun St., Charleston.
  4. Grief support workshops on different topics are provided throughout the year at multiple in-person locations and on Zoom, such as “Holiday Grief and Hope” and “Grief, Then and Now: Putting the Pieces Together.”

All of these grief support opportunities are open to the community and free to participants. Call 843-723-2524 for more information about these programs and to find the best fit for you and your grief. A Stuhr Funeral Home staff member will help guide you every step of the way and ensure you get connected with the right group to help you take steps toward healing.

In addition to these grief support opportunities, Stuhr Funeral Home encourages people in the throes of grief to take care of themselves to the best of their ability.

“Be kind, gentle and compassionate with yourself when you’re grieving,” says Meyer. “Recognize that grief may impact individual members of a family in different ways. Be sure to see your primary physician. Grief may impact one physically, emotionally, and spiritually.”

Those who are facing grief after loss are strongly encouraged to seek grief support. One may begin with their primary physician for assessment and referrals and/ or with their local faith group clergy.

It’s also important to reach out to family and friends during the grieving process. Lean on those you love to help you cope with the loss that you’re facing.

“Last but certainly not least, recognize that grief is very exhausting,” adds Meyer. “Try to rest a bit more, get some physical exercise, stay hydrated, eat nutritionally, and be open to grief support.”
